The interview begins with Lewitzky's childhood and education in So. Calif., and continues with her decision to become a dancer,
her years with Lester Horton's companies, her summons to appear before the House Committee on Un-American Activities, marriage
and motherhood, and the formation of the Lewitzky Dance Company. Major topics discussed include managing a dance co., the
casting, costuming, staging, musical accompaniment, and performance of particular dances, the relationship of dance to other
art forms, the teaching and training of dancers, Idyllwild School of Music and Arts and the Calif. Inst. of the Arts, federal
funding of the arts, feminist issues, and Lewitzky's philosophy of dance and choreography.

Lewitzky was born Jan. 13, 1916, Llano del Rio, Calif. She attended San Bernardino High School and was the protegé of Lester
Horton. She was a dancer with the Lester Horton Co., L.A., Calif., 1935-50, co-founder and co-director, Horton Dance Theater,
L.A., 1946-50, and choreographer from 1948 to the present. She was founder and director, Dance Associates, L.A., 1951-55,
chair, Dance Dept., Idyllwild School of Music and the Arts, Calif., 1956-74, artistic director, Lewitzky Dance Co., L.A.,
1966 to the present, founder and dean, School of Dance, Calif. Inst. of the Arts, 1969-74, founder and director, Dance Gallery,
L.A., c.1974-88, and co-producer, Olympic Arts Festival, L.A., 1984.
